Leaf 1

Now for the dear Grandchildren – Douglas & [illegible]
I will write about myself. For you
I was Born March 23rd 1839 – in the Palace of
Lord Dunmore in the City of Williamsburg Virginia
Educated at Fords and Pryors schools in Williamsburg
the Rev. Pike Powers school in Staunton Va; William &
Mary College, and the University of Va at Charlottesville,
I was one of the first "offenders" in the war, (as there
are some in the North who call themselves the first
defenders). I went in May [illegible] 1861 and surrendered
at Appomattox with Genl Lee – Genl Pickett and a few
others – see my Appomattox Paroles of which I have two, one
more, than most People.– You will find some of my
War History, written out by me shortly after 1865 – in
a book, with (G.W.S. Cash) in gilt letters on the back
and I will try and add to them from time
to time - the most important were finished long
ago. - Wonderful to relate, I am a Virginian, but have
never used tobacco – or mixed in Politics. – have
declined all offers (of which many have been made
me) to enter Public Life – and, do not regret it
– owned nearly 100 Slaves with those of my Grandmother
& my Aunt – and 1/4 of those belonging to my Uncle George
W Southall –, And do not believe Slavery was wrong –

Leaf 2

because I have seen many more happy & useful
Negroes, while Slavery existed, than I have ever
seen since the emancipation –, during Slavery
I saw about 15 Lunatic Negroes, – since that
time I have seen over 500 – My People were
always kind to their servants – and I never saw
any cruelty – My Body Servant Edmund Anderson
never accepted his Freedom, and died after the
war belonging to me, – Solomon remained the same
to his end – which, over took him, several Years ago.
in my service – Caroline Jackson went to New York
made money – Came back to Williamsburg & before
she died sent for me – and asked me to bring a
Notary to Her bed side and gave me Her bank Book
and an order for $538.00 and also Her Freedmans Bank
Book. – From the latter of which I still have – nothing
can be gotten – but the New York Bank paid me the 538.00
Edmund Anderson behaved with quiet – Courage when
called to face the Enemys guns, bringing me another
horse, or any thing of that kind, – I never saw Him
flinch – and when at Appomattox – believing I would
fall on that field –, I gave him a letter for my Father
and told Him, in the letter, I had mentioned He was to
have the horse he was there on – and also the one
I was riding after I fell – if it came back to its mate
He went into the fence corner & Genl Pickett found him there Crying

Leaf 3

He loved My horses dearly – and fortunately
although I had two shot under me
one was the property of Genl Dearing
Loaned to me, and the other was an
ordinance mare, belonging to the Confederate
ordinance department, taken by me for that
day only. When I had money & a good property
I gave largely, for my means, to the – poor, never to
the rich, – was at that time very popular, when
unable to continue giving, my popularity left me,
but I was never what the World calls, a good fellow
& Friend, – could never go with a man when he was
in the wrong, and had the misfortune of being able
to see the faults of my best Friends – for the same
reason, could never be a "Party Man" - believe in my
Old age, that money is the most convenient possession
if coupled with Contentment – but that Religion above
all things, gives even in this world, the most constant
comfort – Certainly, it is worth every thing else put together;
I am without Ambition, and certainly not covetous – do not
bear Malice – but only like those that – like me
have never wasted any love on undeserving people
have been greatly blessed, Thank the Good Lord, in my
Children – they are very good and kind to me – wish
no one harm in the world – but wish success to some
far more than I do to others – My great fault is that I am

Leaf 4

unable to love all people that the Good God
made, as I ought to – it seems to me that
I care too little for them – have them not –
constantly on my mind, as I should, and am
far too willing to drop out of my Life those
that do not suit me. have very little, if any,
Reverence for the Great of this world – Am Proud
of having well Known, Genl Robert E. Lee, – The Rev. [illegible]
Peterkin of Richmond, and the Rev. Churchill Gibson of
Petersburg – have other things I am glad of, but nothing else,br>to be proud of, Except my Children & Grand Children

Yours Affectionately Ro: A: Bright.

Helen M. Anderson Papers, 1818-1912
Description
An account of the resource
The Helen M. Anderson collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Anderson and U.S. Army officers occupying Williamsburg, Virginia in 1862. Papers document the seizure of wine from Anderson’s house; its storage at the Eastern State Asylum; Anderson’s attempts to retrieve the wine; and the U.S. provost marshall’s dispensing of the wine. Correspondents include Lieutenant John Simpson, Lieutenant Colonel S. E. Smith and Corporal Flanagan from the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment.
Also included are the will of Sarah Jerdone (1732-1818); the will of Robert Southall Bright (1872-1943) born in Williamsburg, Va. to Robert Anderson and Nannie (Munford) Bright; and an autobiographical essay by Robert Anderson Bright (1839-1904) of Williamsburg, Va. Bright recounts his experiences during the war fighting alongside Generals Lee and Pickett and expresses his views concerning slavery and emancipation.

BE IT REMEMBERED that I, Robert S. Bright, lawyer, of
Philadelphia, being of sound in disposing mind, memory and
understanding, do hereby make, publish and declare this as
and for my last will and testament.
I give to my son, Douglas Southall Bright, my ring and
my watch with chain and seal. Asked line
I devise my wife to select a book or some article from my
effects for each, my sister, my brother and my brothers–in–law
and sisters-in-law, and give the same to them as a remembrance
from me. I also desire my wife to give some article from my
effects to my cousin Eleanor A. Hare as a remembrance from me.
My two policies of insurance on my life are already made
payable to my wife and she will have no trouble collecting them.
All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real, personal
and next whatsoever and wheresoever I give devise and bequeath
absolutely and in fee simple to my beloved wife, Caroline de
Beelen Lovett Bright and her heirs for ever. Having him listed
confidence in the wisdom and goodness of my wife I have thought
it best to leave her my whole estate unincumbered by any trust
or provision for my son Douglas, In doing this I do not wish my
son to feel that it was through any lack of affection for him
that I made this provision, and it is my wish that my wife if,
and when, she thinks it wise, to give my son one half of my said
estate. This is merely a wish of mine and the complying with
it is left to the judgment and wisdom of my wife.
I wish also to remind my wife that by reason of the
tremendous increase in the production of gold, the falling of
interest rates on safe investments &c, both of which will
probably continue, a principal sum which a few years ago produced
a handsome income now produces very little, while the cost of
living has increased and is increasing all the time. I therefore
hope that she will leave our son Douglas Southall Bright, all
of her estate, as it will not be too much to protect him, his
wife and his children if he has children against the ups and
page 2
downs of life. I would suggest that she leave half of her
estate to him absolutely in the other half in trust with a
trust Company, to pay the income to him for life and the
principal to his children after his death, but she will be
guided in the provision she will make for him by the way his
character and intelligence develop as he reaches manhood.
I also suggest that my wife be in no hurry to sell my
real estate in Virginia and her real estate in Washington as
I believe both will be very valuable in time, and if she is
approached by a purchaser to seek the advice of an honest, sincere
and disinterested real estate man if she can find one.
I also urge upon my wife the wisdom of not seeking or
accepting the advice of relatives or friends in connection with
her business affairs. Although their intentions are good
their advice is generally bad. I would advise her to seek the
advice of a good, conscientious lawyer and banker in connection
with her affairs.
I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my wife Caroline
DeBeelen Lovett Bright to be the executrix of this my last will and
testament and I give her full power to sell or dispose of at
private or public sale at any time for such sums as she may
deem fit any or all of my real estate, without liability as to
the application or mis-application of the purchase money.
IN WITNESS HEREOF I have hereunto set my he and he and seal this
day of June 1912.
Signed, sealed, published
and declared by Robert S.
Bright the testator as and
for his last will and testa-
ment in our presence, who in
his presence and in the
presence of each other and at
his request have hereunto
subscribed our names as
witnesses.

Capt Hennessey
Sir Several days ago my house was broken
open by a band of armed soldiers, and a large quantity of old
and very valuable wine taken way., a large portion of it was
consumed by soldiers and negros, the remainder being
placed in a room in the Lunatic Asylum. I was
assured that it would be taken care of & restored to me
[verso]
but the officer now acting here as Provost Marshal
has repeatedly taken away large quantities of it,
and unless I can obtain your assistance it will all
Soon be consumed. I appeal to you as a gentleman
to aid me. I am an old Lady, utterly unable to help
myslef, and request that you will use your influence to
redress the indignity & outrages that have been committed

Sir
My House was broken open this
morning by an armed band, of Soldiers, and a large
quantity of very valuable old wine, which has been
in my family for many years, taken away. This is
a heavy loss to me, and one that is irreparable,
and I appeal to you to exercise your authority
and have it restored to me. Your immediate
action is requested, otherwise it will be too late.
Very respectfully yours,
Please telegraph your order. Your soldiers were

that such is not the case.
