Robert Anderson letter to Elizabeth G Elliott, 1848 January 10
Estates (Law)--Virginia
Decedents' family maintenance--Virginia.
Distribution of decedents' estates--Virginia.
Paper is in good condition, but the letter has been torn in half. They seem to have been used as bands to bind other papers together, as one is marked on its reverse "Old Rects" and the other "Recent Rects". Both bear folds and scuffs that indicate having been wrapped around a pile of other papers. Originally a single sheet folded at the middle, with a small impression at the upper left corner of the first page. Very faint, it appears to have been a silhouette in an octogon. Pages listed in the order they would be in were the paper still intact.

A decree from the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery, 6 pages. It declares a guardian for minors being represented in the suit. Declares that a parcel of land purchased after drawing up the will does not descend to Elizabeth Elliott with the rest of Kemp's property, but that she is entitled to a dower portion of one third of the property. The whole parcel is to be measured and sold, and the profits divided between the parties entitled to it. Several accounts are demanded, including how Frederick Power has been handling Kemp's estate.
