A name given to the resource
Helen M. Anderson Papers, 1818-1912
Description
An account of the resource
The Helen M. Anderson collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Anderson and U.S. Army officers occupying Williamsburg, Virginia in 1862. Papers document the seizure of wine from Anderson’s house; its storage at the Eastern State Asylum; Anderson’s attempts to retrieve the wine; and the U.S. provost marshall’s dispensing of the wine. Correspondents include Lieutenant John Simpson, Lieutenant Colonel S. E. Smith and Corporal Flanagan from the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment.
Also included are the will of Sarah Jerdone (1732-1818); the will of Robert Southall Bright (1872-1943) born in Williamsburg, Va. to Robert Anderson and Nannie (Munford) Bright; and an autobiographical essay by Robert Anderson Bright (1839-1904) of Williamsburg, Va. Bright recounts his experiences during the war fighting alongside Generals Lee and Pickett and expresses his views concerning slavery and emancipation.

In the name of God Amen. I Sarah Jerdone of the Parish
of St. Martin's, and County of Louisa widow and relict of Francis
Jerdone late of the said Parish and County, being in good
health, and by the blessing of God, of sound and disposing mind
and memory, yet remembering the uncertainty of Human
life, and of the Continuance of those blessings, do for the
settlement of all my worldly affairs, and for the purpose, of
disposing, not only all of the estate, of every kind, which I
have acquired, since the decease of my said husband, or
was entitled to, anterior thereto, but also, of all the estate,
which he, by his testament empowered me to dispose of,
as I might see fit, now make my Testament and last
will in manner and form following. In the first place,
having full faith, in Jesus Christ as the son of God one,
with the father and the Holy Ghost, and having a stedfast
Hope, that through his merits and mediation, my God will
receive my Spirit I commit it to his mercy and protection,
and that my executors herein after named, will Cause my
body, to be decently intered by the side of the remains of my
late husband Francis Jerdone, in hopes of a Joyful
resurrection to eternal life and happiness.
Item. If it shall appear, that any Just Debts were due
from me, at the time of my decease, it is my desire that
they, as well, as my funeral expenses shall be first paid
out of my residuary estate.
Item. If I depart this life, between the first day of January
and the first day of March in any year, It is my will, that
my Slaves herein after directed to be sold by my executors
herein after named, be sold as soon as may be, after my
decease, on such credit as my executors, or such of them,
as shall take that office on himself or themselves, shall
think proper in their discretion, and demand from the
[page 2]
purchaser or purchasers Bond with good personal
securities or Real securities for the purchase money. But
if my decease shall happen, in any year, between the
first day of March, and the last day of December, that
my slaves aforesaid, be retained by my said executor or
executors on the Lands whereon they shall then be, to
labour during that period, for the benefit of my son
Francis Jerdone, and be sold on like credit, and upon
like security, as soon as may be thereafter. But in
either Case, if such executor or executors Consider it
to be more, for the advantage of those who are to receive
the benefit of such sale, that the said slaves should
be sold for ready money, he or they may sell them
for ready money.
Item. I had by my said Husband Francis Jerdone
five daughters to wit, Mary who was the widow of
George Pottie decd. and now the widow of Adam Toler
decd. Elizabeth now the widow of Alexander McAuley dec.
Isabella now the wife of Thomas Mitchell, Sarah, now
deceased, who was the wife of George Breckenridge
who is now supposed to be resident with his children
by her, in that part of the British Empire called
England, and Anne now deceased, who was the wife of
Charles Thompson and it being my will to provide for
them, who are alive, and the children of such of them who
are dead, allowing to the children of such of my daughters
who are dead, and of such as may die in my lifetime,
so much among the children of each, as their mother
would have had, if she had been alive, that is, one
fifth part of my estate herein after mentioned,
[page 3]
after deducting from the amount five hundred pounds
Current money of Virginia, which sum I direct my
said executor or executors to pay to my daughter
Isabella the wife of Thomas Mitchell to be at her
disposal either by deed in writing under her hand
and seal in her lifetime, or by a writing appoint-
=ment in the nature of a last will and testament,
notwithstanding her Coverture, to take effect at her
decease but at no time subject to the Controul of
her husband.
Item. That part of my Estate which I mean to appriate
to my Daughters and their descendants, consists of one
thousand one hundred and eighty nine pounds six shillings
and five pence, heretofore advanced to my daughter
Elizabeth MCAuly to be deducted out of her share of
the whole estate, so to be appropriated, after first deduct=
=ing the five hundred pounds for the use of my
daughter Isabella Mitchell which I mean to give
to her limited as aforesaid, beyond the shares of my
other daughters, and their descendants but I mean
not, that the said debt due for my daughter
Elizabeth McAuly to me, and to be deducted out
of her share, should be chargeable with any Interest
from the time of the advancement, but that in
the distribution of my whole estate, if the whole
share of my daughter Elizabeth McAuly should be
less than the sum of one thousand one hundred and eighty nine
pounds six shillings and five pence, then and in that case
her part shall be made equal to that sum by my executor or
[page 4]
executors herein after named, But if her part shall exceed
that sum, then she shall receive in addition to that
sum so much more of my estate as will make her share
equal to that of the rest of my Daughters and their descend=
=ants. I mean to appriate to the same purpose the
money or sums of money which may be obtained from
the sale of the slaves herein after directed to be sold,
and I mean to appropriate to the same purpose what=
=ever may be recovered of the descendants or representatives
of William Holt by a suit Originally brought by me
in the high Court of Chancery but now depending before
the Superior Court of Chancery by law directed to be
holden at the former Capitol in the City of Williamsburg.
Out of those three funds five hundred pounds must
first be deducted for the use of my daughter
Isabella Mitchell whom I mean to prefer so far, and after
that deduction my Will is, that the residue be divided
into five equal parts, of which I give and bequeath one, to
my daughter Mary Toler, one, to my daughter Elizabeth
McAuly, one to my daughter Isabella Mitchell, one
to the children of my daughter Sarah Breckenridge
to be equally divided among them, and to the chil=
=dren of my daughter and Thompson to be equally
divided among them; - But it is to be understood
that the debt due me from my daughter Elizabeth
McAuly must be deducted out of her fifth part,
and the debt itself so disposed of that she and all my
living daughters and the children of my deceased
daughters in manner aforesaid, be entitled to one fifth
part thereof, that is to say each of my living
[page 5]
daughters including the said Elizabeth McCauly and the
children of each of my deceased daughters among them -
shall be entitled to one fifth part of the money so to be deduct=
=ed; But in no event shall my said daughter Elizabeth
McCauly receive less than the sum of one thousand one
hundred and eighty nine pounds six shillings and five
pence - as herein before mentioned. And in Case all
or any of the legatees under this my last will and
testament should object to the children of my deceased
daughters having their mothers proportion, of my estate,
or that part to which the mother would have
been entitled, had she been living, such a legatee or
legatees so objecting shall lose all benefit which he
or they would otherwise have derived, from the
money and debts herein before mentioned, and all
the sd. debts and money shall in that case be equally
divided among the children of the deceased daughter,
and among such other Legatees as shall acceed to the
principles of the above bequest.
Item It is my will that, my slaves herein after named, be
sold by my executors herein after named, or such of them
as shall take that Office upon himself or themselves
to wit Phebe, Christopher, Louisa, Beck, Peter, Julius, Saul, Sampson,
Ned, Dorcas, with her present increase, Rachel, Anderson
Mahala, Priss, Primus, Wyatt, Winefred, Amy, Pat,
Ned, Kitty, Venus, Edmund, David, Jacob, Cato, Sampson,
Patrick, Gibb, Sam, York & Juba also all the progeny
which the females among the said above mentioned
may have hereafter or between the date of these presents
and the sale of them for the purpose of making
[page 6]
distribution as aforesaid.
Item I give to my grand son George Pottie one fifth part
of the share which would otherwise fall to his mother
Mary Toler, giving to her power and authority during her
life either by deed in writing or by her last will and
testament to dispose of the other four fifths of that share
at her pleasure, but if she shall die, without making
any such disposition, then and in that Case the said
four fifths shall be equally divided between Sarah
and Elizabeth daughters of my said daughter Mary
Toler.
Item It is my will that my daughters Elizabeth McAuly
and Isabella Mitchell shall have, each, full power to
dispose of what they shall be entitled unto, under this will,
among their children by Deed in writing in the nature of
a last Will and Testament, in case of the latter, Notwith=
=standing her Coverture without any Controul of her husband.
Item I give and bequeath unto my son Francis Jerdone
all my household furniture of every kind and description,
all my wheel Carriages of every kind, and all my stock
of every kind whatsoever, releasing unto him all actions and
suits, and all Causes of actions, and suits, and all and every
Claim or demand, whatsoever which I now have or which
my executors might otherwise have against my said son
after my decease. And all the rest and residue of my
estate not herein particularly devised I give and bequeath
to be equally divided among all my daughters which
are now living and the descendants of those who are
dead, under the same restrictions and limitations as
our herein before mentioned and expressed, subject only
[page 7]
to the payment of my just debts and the expenses
of my funeral.
Item It is my will that all my personal estate as well as
what may be recovered of the executors and representatives
of the above named William Holt shall be inventoried
by my executors and the inventory returned to the Court
where this will shall be recorded but that no part of
the said estate shall be appraised.
Item I hereby revoke all former and other wills by me
heretofore made.

<br /><p>In the name of <span style="text-decoration:underline;">God</span>. I Joseph Ashlin being of sound mind<br />and memory, do make and ordain this present writing<br />my last will and Testament! To God I recommend my<br />soul, from whom I received, and now retain it, my body to<br />the humanity of my bretheren in life : Item. It has<br />been my misfortune, from and by a connection carnally<br />with a woman of colour, to bring into creation the<br />following children, now living "to wit" William Barrett<br />now with Capt Benjamin Ireson, Salley Barrett, now<br />residing with Thomas Pulling, Frances Barrett, now<br />residing with Peter Heifer, and Cyrus Barrett, now or<br />heretofore residing with me. And although the laws of<br />my country in whose strugles I have fought and bled, now<br />prohibit a general emancipation, yet from my peculiar<br />situation, I beg, solicit and pray that the aforesaid William<br />Barrett, Salley Barrett, Frances Barrett, and Cyrus Barrett<br />and the future increase and progeny of the said Salley and<br />Frances, may be permitted, and I do hereby bequeath to them<br />and each of them the blessing of Liberty, and free emancipa-<br />=tion during their natural lives, and I do hereby request<br />Colo. Richard Adams to execute this will, and act as the<br />guardian to my said Children. In testimony whereof<br />I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th. July 1807.</p>
<br /><p>Signed, Sealed, acknowledged<br />and declared, to be his will<br />Joseph Ashlin seal<br />and at his request, subscribed<br />by us Geo. Wm Smith<br />Alexr. Hare, James Cannon</p>
<br /><p>At a quarterly Court of Hustings continued by adjournment<br />and held for the City of Richmond, at the Courthouse, the<br />thirteenth day of November 1807. This Last will and<br />Testament of Jospeph Ashlin deceased, was proved by the<br />oath</p>

<br />oath of George William Smith, a witness thereto, and<br />ordered to be recorded. <br /><p>Test Adam Craig Clk<br />A copy. Test Th. C. Howard D.C.</p>
<br /><br /><p>Joseph Ashlin's<br />Will</p>
<br /><p>I am decidedly of opinion, that the free chil<br />dren of colour of Joseph Ashlin, to wit, William Barrett,<br />Sally Barrett, Francis Barrett and Cyrus Barrett<br />are free, by virtue of this will. The law requires<br />that they should remove from this state. I therefore<br />advise William Barrett to carry them with him<br />to the Northward. If he meets with any difficulty<br />in so doing, let him mention the subject to me.</p>

By resort-<br />ing to the ordinary means of leeching<br />cupping, blistering, and vss. & long con<br />tinued purging the pain in seven weeks<br />was entirely relieved, and the knee reduced<br />almost to the size of its fellow - about<br />this time I removed to Richmond.</p>

<h4>Page 1</h4>
<br /><p>Shadwell, July 15'th 1763<br />Dear Page</p>
<br /><br /><p>Yours of May 30'th came safe to hand. The rival you mentioned I know not whether<br />to think formidable or not as there has been so great an opening for him during my absence.<br />I say <q>has been</q> because I expect there is one no longer since you have undertaken to act as my<br />attorney. You advise me to 'go immediately and lay siege in form.' You certainly did not think<br />at the time you wrote this of that paragraph in my letter wherein I mentioned to you my<br />resolution of going to Britain. And to begin an affair of that kind now, and carry it on so long<br />a time in form is by no means a proper plan. No, no, Page, whatever assurances I may give<br />her in private of my esteem for her, or whatever assurances I may ask in return from her,<br />depend on it they must be kept in private. Necessity will oblige me to proceed in a method<br />which is not generally thought fair, that of treating with a ward before obtaining the ap=<br />probation of her guardian. I say necessity will oblige me to it, because I never can bear to<br />remain in suspense so long a time. If I am to succeed the sooner I know it the less unea=<br />siness I shall have to go through : if I am to meet with a disappointment the sooner I know<br />it the more of life I shall have to wear it off: and if I do meet with one, I hope in god<br />and verily believe it will be the last. I assure you that I allmost envy you your present<br />freedom: and if Belinda will not accept of my service it shall never be offered to another.<br />That she may I pray most sincerely, but that she will she never gave me reason to hope. With regard<br />to my not proceeding in form I do not know how She may like it : I am afraid not much:<br />that her guardians would not if they should know of it is very certain. But I should think<br />that if they were consulted after my return, it would be sufficient. The greatest inconveni=<br />ence would be my not having the liberty of visiting so freely. This is a subject worth your<br /><br /></p>
<h4>Page 2</h4>
<p>talking over with her; and I wish you would and would transmit me your whole confab at<br />length. I should be scared to death at making her so unreasonable a proposal as that of wai=<br />=ting until I returned from Britain, unless she could be first prepared for it. I am afraid it<br />will make my chance of succeeding considerably worse. But the event at last must be this,<br />that if she consents I shall be happy; if she does not, I must endeavor to be as much so as<br />possible. I have thought a good deal on your case, and as mine may perhaps be similar<br />I must endeavor to look on it in the same light in which I have often advised you to look<br />on yours. Perfect happiness I beleive was never intended by the deity to be the lot of any<br />of his creatures in this world; but that he has very much put in our power the near=<br />ness of our approaches to it, is what I steadfastly beleive. The most fortunate of us all<br />in our journey through life frequently meet with calamities and misfortunes which may<br />greatly afflict us: and to fortify our minds against the attacks of these calamities and mis=<br />=fortunes should be one of the principal studies and endeavors of our lives. The only me=<br />=thod of doing this is to assume a perfect resignation to the divine will, to consider that<br />whatever does happen, must happen, and that by our uneasiness we cannot prevent the<br />blow before it does fall, but we may add to it's force after it has fallen. These consi=<br />=derations and others such as these may enable us in some measure to surmount the<br />difficulties thrown in our way, to bear up with a tolerable degree of patience under<br />this burthen of life, and to proceed with a pious and unshaken resignation till we ar=<br />=rive at our journey's end, where we may deliver up our trust into the hands of him who<br />gave it, and receive such reward as to him shall seem proportioned to our merit. Such<br />dear Page, will be the language of the man who considers his situation in this life, and<br /><br /></p>
<h4>Page 3</h4>
<p>such should be the language of every man who would wish to render that situation as<br />easy as the nature of it will admit. Few things will disturb him at all; nothing will dis=<br />=turb him much.</p>
<br /><br /><p>If this letter was to fall into the hands of some of our gay acquaintance, your corres=<br />=pondent and his solemn notions would probably be the subjects of a great deal of mirth and<br />raillery, but to you I think I can venture to send it. It is in effect but a continuation<br />of the many conversations we have had on subjects of this kind, and I heartily wish we<br />could now continue these conversations face to face. The time will not be very long now<br />before we may do it, as I expect to be in Williamsburg by the first of October if not sooner.<br />I do not know that I shall have occasion to return if I can rent rooms in town to lodge in;<br />and to prevent the inconveniency of moving my lodgings for the future, I think to<br />build. No castle though I assure you, only a small house which shall contain<br />a room for myself and another for you, and no more, unless Belinda should think pro-<br />=per to favor us with her company, in which case I will enlarge the plan as much as<br />she pleases. Make my compliments to her particularly, as also to Sukey Potter, Judy<br />Burwell and such others of my acquaitances as enquire after me. I am</p>
<br /><br /><p>Dear Page<br />Your sincere friend<br />T. Jefferson</p>

Description
An account of the resource
Abstract listing the cargo of an unknown slave trader bound for the Windward Coast of Africa, modern Côte d'Ivoire. The trader was most likely from Liverpool as some of the cargo is from Manchester. The cargo consists chiefly of manufactured goods including cloth, beads, muskets and spirits. Much of the cloth is Indian in origin, chiloes, brawles, niccaneees, and bijudipauts. There are some raw materials including lead and iron listed in the cargo. The mention of cloth from Benin "if to be gott' implies trading en route. The cargo was to be traded for 250 slaves. There is a notation in pencil which may suggest 40 of the slaves were lost during the voyage. Slavevoyages.org shows one voyage in 1756 that left Africa with 250 slaves and reached America with 210 [see entry 24046]. That voyage was undertaken by the Bromley commanded by Captain Collins. There is a brief notice of the Bromley's arrival at Barbados in Read's Weekly Journal, or British Gazeteer dated May 15, 1756.

F.S. Lincoln Photography Collection
Description
An account of the resource
The FS Lincoln Collection
Biographical Sketch
Mr. Fay S. Lincoln (known professionally as F.S. Lincoln) operated a photography studio in New York City from the 1930s until the mid 1960s. He was born in Keene, New Hampshire in 1894 and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Although he received training as an engineer, Mr. Lincoln chose to become a professional photographer in 1929, when he opened the firm of Nyholm & Lincoln in conjunction with another photographer, Peter Nyholm, in New York City. A few years later, he opened his own studio at 114 East 32nd St.1
In 1932, Lincoln began corresponding with Kenneth Chorley, President of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, about the possibility of contracting with the Foundation to photograph the completed restoration work at Williamsburg. Lincoln had learned that John D. Rockefeller, Jr. was looking for someone to create a master collection of photos of Williamsburg through Arthur S. Vernay, an acquaintance of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. In his correspondence, Lincoln noted he had completed photographic assignments for many of the top architects and designers in New York, including Arthur S. Vernay, Joseph Urban, James Gamble Rogers, Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker, McKim, Mead, & White, Robert Locher, and Eugene Schoen. He also pointed out that he had sold architectural photos to many prominent magazines, including "Architectural Record," "National Geographic," "Country Life," "Architectural Forum," and "Spur."2
Lincoln's credentials, along with sample photographs and recommendations from magazine editors, enabled him to secure a contract with Colonial Williamsburg on April 22, 1935. According to the terms of the contract, Lincoln was hired to prepare a master collection of photographs and negatives that Colonial Williamsburg could sell to tourists and residents of Williamsburg, as well as use for promotional purposes. Lincoln retained the right to sell copies of his photographs at his New York studio, provided he consulted with the Foundation regarding the proposed use of the photographs. He also retained title to all negatives and copyright for all photos until the termination of his business. Plans for a traveling exhibition of Lincoln's photographs of Williamsburg were also mentioned in the contract.3
During 1935, F.S. Lincoln traveled to Williamsburg at seasonal intervals to photograph views requested by the Foundation. A panel of Colonial Williamsburg employees reviewed each series of photos and selected a group to be added to the master collection. F.S. Lincoln photos illustrated two portfolios about Colonial Williamsburg published in the "Architectural Record" in December 1935 and November 1936. Full-page black and white photos of restored buildings and gardens accompanied articles on the restoration written by Kenneth Chorley, Fiske Kimball, William G. Perry, and Arthur Shurcliff. Thus, Lincoln's photos gave the American public their first introduction to the completed restoration.
Lincoln had also been hired by Colonial Williamsburg to create a group of photographs of Williamsburg that could be exhibited. Correspondence between staff members indicates that John D. Rockefeller, Jr. hoped to mount a traveling exhibit of Williamsburg photographs. An exhibit of a selection of Lincoln's views of Williamsburg, along with photos he took for "Harper's Bazaar," "House and Garden," "House Beautiful," "Vanity Fair," "National Geographic," and "Town and Country," was held at the Rabinovitch Gallery in New York City from October 4-17, 1935.
Although Foundation employees were satisfied with the quality of Lincoln's photographs, they were dismayed by the cost of individual prints and enlargements. Memos exchanged between members of the marketing staff indicate that employees were having a hard time convincing distributors to purchase enlargements of the Lincoln photos for display in shop windows. As a result, the Foundation's agreement with F.S. Lincoln was terminated on April 21, 1936.4
Despite this setback, F.S. Lincoln secured contracts for many other architectural photography projects in the 1930s. He received numerous commissions to photograph buildings in New York City and also traveled abroad on several assignments. In 1934, he completed a portfolio of photos of Mont St. Michel and in 1938 he toured the deep South and photographed examples of antebellum architecture. Lincoln's photos were widely published in the 1930s and 1940s in such magazines as "Architectural Record," "House Beautiful," "National Geographic," "Country Life," and "Architectural Forum." In addition, he published a book of his photographs in 1946 entitled "Charleston: Photographic Studies by F.S. Lincoln."5
F.S. Lincoln continued to operate a photography studio in New York City until 1965, when he retired and moved to Center Hall, Pennsylvania to live with his sister. He forwarded all of his negatives of Williamsburg buildings to the Foundation in 1972, along with a letter stating that “the copyright of the photographs has run out, so you are free to use them as desired.”6 Upon his death in 1976, the remainder of Lincoln's archive of prints and negatives, as well as some business papers, were donated to the Pennsylvania State University Archives.
Scope and Contents
The F.S. Lincoln collection consists of black and white negatives and prints taken by Mr. Lincoln in preparation for the publication of "The Restoration of Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia," a series of articles appearing in the December 1935 and November 1936 issues of "The Architectural Record." Both issues featured a portfolio of buildings and gardens in the newly restored historic area of Williamsburg.
In order to produce a large pool of photos for use in these portfolios, Mr. Lincoln created comprehensive visual documentation of the work completed during the initial phases of the restoration (1927-1935.) He photographed the exteriors and interiors of thirty restored buildings, including the exhibition buildings open to the public, such as the Governor's Palace, the Capitol, Raleigh Tavern, Bruton Parish Church, the Wren Building, and the Powder Magazine. In addition, he captured exterior views of some of the shops open on Merchant's Square and restored buildings adapted for public use, such as the Public Library. He also photographed many of the gardens and garden ornaments throughout the restored area.
The collection is organized into series by format. Series included in the collection are negatives; bound matted and signed prints; unbound matted and signed prints; and small albums. Within each format, items are organized according to the numbering system assigned by Mr. Lincoln. The first three digits of numbers assigned to the images correspond to a particular building or subject category. For example, all images of the Capitol have numbers beginning with 325 and all miscellaneous views have numbers beginning with 365. After these first three digits, Lincoln added a P for print and then a successive number for each view. For example, the first view of the Capitol is number 325P1. An “LC” prefix has been added to all image numbers by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation to identify the images as coming from the Lincoln Collection.

This image of the reconstructed Capitol shows its south and west facades. Rounded apsidal ends derive from Roman basilicas which contained such features in which public magistrates officiated. Completed during the reign of Queen Anne, the original cupola displayed the ruler's coat of arms. Gnarled trunks of paper mulberry trees appear along Blair Street - a reference to the early colonists' unsuccessful efforts to establish silk production in Virginia.
