<text>Final ink on linen landscape drawings of gardens at various historic sites throughout Virginia executed by Landscape Architect Arthur A. Shurcliff and his associates. Many are preliminary paced or measured landscape plans for Shurcliff's survey of Southern Colonial Places. He was assisted in measuring and drawing by his son, Sidney N. Shurcliff, and R. D'Arcy Bonnet.

Study of landscape design precedents from the colonial era, as well as compilation of lists of plants known to have grown in colonial Virginia, allowed Shurcliff to develop schemes for reconstructing Williamsburg gardens at each site. Southern Colonial Places, an oversize album consisting of photographs, landscape drawings, and field notes, compiles Shurcliff’s survey with his colleagues of extant Virginia plantations dating to the eighteenth-century. His discoveries during this process allowed him to make educated guesses about garden features when archaeological and historical research yielded no clues.
