The slide features a view of East elevation of the Wren Building. One of the oldest academic structures in the United States, the Wren Building retains a large portion of its original outside walls, despite being damaged by several fires in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The statue of Lord Botetourt stands in the foreground. It serves as a focal point on the path leading towards the building whose features are thought to be based upon an adaptation of a Sir Christopher Wren design. Due to preservation concerns, the statue has since been moved to an indoor location.]]>
The caption reads: "Burton Parish Church, Williamsburg, Virginia. Court Church of Colonial Virginia. In this building worshipped seven Royal Governors, and the Revolutionary Fathers and early statesmen of Virginia, including Washington, Jefferson, Monroe, Tyler, Henry, Marshall, and many others.

Church work was established here about 1632. The name, Bruton, dates from 1674, at which time the Rev. Rowland Jones, ancestor of Mrs. Washington, was minister. In 1683 the first brick church was built. Williamsburg became the capitol in 1699, and the old church was torn down and the present cruciform structure erected in 1710-15.

The Bell in the Steeple, made in England in 1761, was the first in America to proclaim Civil Independence. The lectern was presented by President Roosevelt, and the bibles by King Edward VII, and President Wilson."]]> AV-92-04-16-V]]>

One of the eighty-eight original structures at Colonial Williamsburg, the Courthouse stood on this site from 1770 onwards but underwent a number of minor modifications in the nineteenth century. It was restored to its colonial appearance and opened as an exhibition building in the early 1930s. The Restoration Archaeological Exhibit housed inside offered early museum visitors an opportunity to learn about eighteenth-century artifacts uncovered by archaeologists working in tandem with architectural historians.]]> Garr-015B (B&W)]]> see also N3608]]>
This image of the Governor's Palace, shown as it was first reconstructed, includes features and details that changed with later research and investigation. Wrought-iron gates and the over-door balcony are now painted white, and louvered exterior doors have been removed as efforts towards authenticity are refined.]]>
