<text>The Helen M. Anderson collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Anderson and U.S. Army officers occupying Williamsburg, Virginia in 1862. Papers document the seizure of wine from Anderson’s house; its storage at the Eastern State Asylum; Anderson’s attempts to retrieve the wine; and the U.S. provost marshall’s dispensing of the wine. Correspondents include Lieutenant John Simpson, Lieutenant Colonel S. E. Smith and Corporal Flanagan from the 5th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment.

Also included are the will of Sarah Jerdone (1732-1818); the will of Robert Southall Bright (1872-1943) born in Williamsburg, Va. to Robert Anderson and Nannie (Munford) Bright; and an autobiographical essay by Robert Anderson Bright (1839-1904) of Williamsburg, Va. Bright recounts his experiences during the war fighting alongside Generals Lee and Pickett and expresses his views concerning slavery and emancipation.</text>
