Description
View looking down Main Street towards the remains of a chimney and the side elevation of the Nelson House, Yorktown, Virginia. The interior chimney of an unusually substantial work building still stood beside the Nelson House when photographed by Rufus Barrows. Described as "Wooden Kitchen and Wash-house, one story, 40 feet [by] 20 feet" in a 1796 Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia policy, the chimney has long since disappeared.
Notation on reverse:
"West view of the Nelson house showing chimney in the old kitchen which formerly stood in the side yard. Note absence architectural brickworks about side down main house."
