Description

Text flap up and text flap down, photostat of Bird's-eye View of Carter's Grove Office Wing and Adjoining Boxwood Parterre, James City County, Virginia. The text flap reads: "This sketch indicates the relation between the buildings and the box garden and justifies the idea of setting the garden building a little off line with the main buildings in order to secure the rather charming effect indicated. The fact that this departs slightly from the arrangement at Westover and leans a little toward presentation of the buildings as at Stratford and even at Mount Airy, it seems to me, however, thoroughly southern in feeling. In case you use for the design of these flanking buildings the delightful kitchen you mentioned at Williamsburg, still another reason will exist for advancing these buildings very slightly so they will not be lost to sight behind the general line of buidings."
